Walk in Beauty
Healing Songs of the Native American Church
Walk in Beauty is made up of twenty healing songs from the Native American Church, or Peyote Church, which had its origins in pre-Columbian Mexico.
Native American Church ceremonies center around long prayers, exhortations on right living, and quiet meditative songs performed in sets of four. Four intertribal songs are also sung by the leader at the beginning of a ceremony, at midnight, at dawn and at the close of ceremony.
Verdell Primeaux, from the Oglalla Sioux Reservation, and Johnny Mike, from Kitsili, Arizona, use "prayer in song" on this CD to create a soothing, quiet background for meditation and spiritual healing.
The songs emphasize respect for other faiths and peoples and the collection ends with two versions of "Amazing Grace," one sung in Navajo, one in Sioux.
