Divided We Fall

A young college-aged woman takes off to travel the U.S. after 9/11 to document hate and violence against her religious community.  Valerie Kaur is a Sikh.

Harvard’s Dr. Diana Eck calls the chronicling of her travels “a starting point for a new dialogue on race and religion that is essential to America’s future.”  Valerie starts her journey in the immediate aftermath of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, and roves the U.S. for five years, documenting stories in the Sikh, Muslim, and Arab American communities.

Valerie asks over and over just ‘who counts’ as American? She interviews people she meets on the street, scholars, lawyers, and legislators about race, religion, and security in post-9/11 America, and weaves her tale into a telling fabric of American society.
