The Nechung Monks

Only six of the 115 monks at Nechung Monastery in Tibet managed to escape after Communist China occupied the nation. The monastery has been partially rebuilt, but under continued Chinese rule has few monks.

The Nechung Monastery in exile in Dharamsala, India, is a different story. The Nechung monastic complex near the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives is now one of the main attractions of Gangchen Kyishong, the seat of the Tibetan government in exile headed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

The Dharamsala Nechung Monastery counts among its many activities a center for training in chanting. This CD was recorded live there and includes confession and consecration prayers, sacred instrumental offerings, prayer to the 25 founders of Tibetan Buddhism and a long-life prayer to His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Care has been taken to revive and transmit all the "lineages of practices" unique to the Nechung monastery of Tibet to a younger generation of monks in Dharamsala. It is the prayer of Nechung Monastery in exile that the younger monks will be able to take the traditions kept alive, including the chanting on this CD, back to Tibet once it becomes a free nation.
